I can't say for sure why Ed did not go into medicine. But for me, I come
from a family of physicians/surgeons, etc. I am the Black Sheep (my mother
says "maverick") of the family. I was interested in medicine, but also knew
I did not take life events of others seriously enough to trust myself with
the care of others' lives <g>. I was far more interested in those things
that were involved with mechanical and electrical processes. If I break
something nobody's life hangs in the balance. That I fell into computers,
which I once feared getting involved with, was purely happenstance. I can
say this for certain; of all my family members I have the most flexibility
when it comes to taking time for extended trips to help my parents when in
need, and I am far happier with what I do for an occupation than my
siblings, aunt or father ever have been. I have no need to pay a few
gazillion dollars annually for malpractice lawsuits, and am not blindly
revered by the general population. I keep a low profile, love what I do,
truly enjoy working with my clients, and am able to provide more help to my
parents than anyone else in the family. And I do not get late night calls
from a clinic or hospital where I need to go in to look into a patient
matter. Nobody dies on me after I have given all I can. I am at peace with
myself.
