Evaporation is the vaporization of liquids. It occurs not only when liquids boil but also at lower temperatures. Sublimation refers to the process whereby solids are turned directly to vapour without passing through a liquid stage. BTW the opposite process (conversion direct from vapour to solid without passing through a liquid stage) does not have a specific name but I call it "hoaring" since it is the process responsible for the formation of hoar frost.
