Best Reason to Wrap it Up
Baltimore STD Rates

We're thrilled that HIV/AIDS medications have come a long way. Infected
people all over the country are living far past previous life
expectancies and rejoicing in their ability to lead fruitful, albeit
heavily medicated, lives. Unfortunately, there is a downside to
innovative AIDS meds. With a lessened threat of death comes a sexual
sigh of relief from those who are uninfected. Basically, people think
it's OK to ditch condoms and live on the edge. Not sexy. Last we
checked, Baltimore still hangs out on the short list of STD red zones,
reporting around 1,000 new HIV infections per year as of 2005. That
means about one in every 650 people in Baltimore contract the virus
yearly, and that's just the reservoir tip of the Trojan. Add to the
equation the prevalence of gonorrhea--more than 35,000 cases in
Baltimore a year as reported by the city Health Department--and a
nationwide rise in chlamydia infections. Free love just doesn't sound
fun anymore. So wrap it up. Seek edgier living on, like, a motorcycle or
something.
