I have found it best to run a single app to ahndle both xiruses and Spyware/Adware (yes, Norton or Symantec corporate). When I see 2 software apps try to work on the same file with on-the-fly scanning it looks like it takes extra overhead, and I have seen various combinations conflict with each other.
When I perform file backups I turn off scanning from disk-to-disk or disk-to-tape, as the files being backed up ought to have been scanned originally when they were last written to the HDD.
