True story:

My wife has my big ol' 21" Sony CRT that I bought for well over $2,000
in the mid-90s. It's a gorgeous monitor, a workhouse, worth every penny
I paid for it, and I've gotten way more than my money's worth out of it.
Now in 2007, it's still working flawlessly.

But it's as big as a house, and she seems to think that a flat panel
will give her more room on her desk. (she uses an 8' door on top of two
files cabinets as a desk, and has so much garbage on it that the last
time she saw the surface of the desk, the year didn't have a 7 in it. Or
a 6.

But nag away enough and, OK, she'll get a flat screen. I go looking for
one and lo-and-behold.... you pretty much just can't find them anymore.
And then I get to thinking... how about if she gets one of 19" flat
screens and I upgrade to a big ol' sucker that I'll have to reinforce
the walls before I can hang it on them. Hey, how about it?

So a pair of 22" widescreens show up yesterday at 6:03 pm. I'm gonna rip
out the pair of 19" 4:3s, running 12x10, and put these in their place.
How hard could it be?

Well, the combo of FC6, ATI Rad/Mob and this VS 22" widescreen isn't
getting along too well. I've found a driver on the ATI Linux site (ahem,
hear that, nVidia?), but haven't gotten around to messing with it. It
appears to be broke for FC6 but the 7 version looks promising.

And then I go to the Windows box... only to find out that.... the T30
that I'm running VFP9 on was a 'bargain' in more ways than one. Top res
on the ATI card in that box is 12x10, and no amount of screaming and
hollering is going to get anything close to a decent looking display out
of it with a widescreen.

So that box now becomes my new test box, and I've got a new TP T61 with
a bazillion bytes of RAM and a hard disk that's even bigger on the way.
Supposedly the res on this new box is 17,200 x 15,580, or something like
that. It should last a couple of years.

So this plan of getting the wife one of these dirt cheap $200 flat
screens for her desk has now run me....

two 22" widescreens............$ 690
new Thinkpad...................$ 2,400
dinner [1] ....................$ 87
plate glass window [2].........$ 318
new gym shoes for #2 son [3]...$ 26
shopping spree at Talbots [4]..$ 500
lost business [5]..............$ 37,200

initial estimate...............$ 209

difference.....................$ 41,002

[1] placate wife after she finds out she's getting another hand-me down
and I'm getting two new monitors AND a new computer
[2] tripped on gym shoe of #2 son at 1 in the morning and sent it
through the plate glass window in the hall
[3] can't find the gym shoe that went through the window
[4] dinner wasn't enough
[5] estimated cost of losing client after telling her how silly her
request to have flashing command buttons was

Eventually having a cooler setup than Derek or Ed: priceless.

P.S. the original post got shit-canned for obvious reasons....
