Hi Folks,

I know some of you have used Citrix Terminal Server. I haven't used it and
I don't have a clue about it. Here's my problem:

Our agency has to use a New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) data
reporting system that uses a Citrix Metaframe plugin to access a central
server, apparently via a TS thing.

The user has Win 2000 SP 4 with no special policies in place. The machine
is on a LAN behind a NAT router.

Setup procedure is to log in as an administrator and install a client that
is accessed via a web browser. It works with IE or Firefox. Once this
installation is done, according to OMH, the system should not need to
reinstall anything for subsequent use. Users should be able to log in as
restricted Domain Users and use the system without problems.

However, the system only works when logging in with an account that has
permission to install programs--Administrator or Power User. The user goes
to the website, logs in, a connection to the server is established,
something is downloaded, and then the system proceeds to install multiple
items. for each item the Windows Installer "preparing to install" window
appears. I lost count at 12 appearances. If the user has a Restricted
account, the system hesitates for a couple of minutes after the download
but before the point where the installations would begin, and then displays
a message saying the connection to the server has been lost. This happens
even if the Restricted User has been given Full Control permissions on the
entire folder hierarchy where the Citrix client lives.

This repeated installation process looks pretty much exactly like the
initial setup process, which suggests something isn't getting registered
properly somewhere during the initial setup. It doesn't matter whether
Firefox or IE is used to access the system.

OMH says this isn't supposed to happen, but that they've seen it on a tiny
handful of systems among alleged thousands of users. Their help desk is
having trouble finding their notes on how this was resolved for that
handful. Today the help desk had a guy they identified as "the programmer"
on the phone with me, and he didn't have any suggestions. The help desk guy
did say that they had somebody there who really understood the system a few
months ago, but he's no longer there.

To summarize: The system works okay when logged in as a Domain User as
Administrator or Power User--the user can get to the server and do her
work, but those multiple reinstalls are not supposed to happen--so this is
not a router or other network issue. OMH says it isn't supposed to
reinstall anything after the initial setup so it could be some kind of
Windows Installer issue. Beyond that, there's a permissions issue that's
not supposed to exist.

The help desk guy is going to keep trying to find the notes, but in the
meantime I've got a computer-illiterate person with a Power User account on
Win 2000 and it's only a matter of time before she gets into trouble.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.
