The passport says "biometric" on it but they are not doing the fingerprinting/Iris checking yet. The documentation says that they will be doing that for new passports from some time in 2007. I would think renewals will be done by the end of the year at the latest so now's the time to renew. I got mine back within a week by post. It costs you £66 but well worth it.
