        Ah, you've run into that amazing Microsoft "innovation": using the  
universal escape symbol as its directory separator. All the rest of  
the world uses '/', but Bill in his Infinite Wisdom couldn't resist  
"innovating" and used the backslash instead.

        The solution, praise to Bill, is to escape the backslash itself with  
another backslash. IOW:

  sqlexec(lnhandle, [update COMPDET SET lydata = 'C:\\calcpay\\pay'  
where
cname= 'Stirling Clan' ])
