Hi Whil!

These were improvised noisemakers concealed in an envelope, but the top of the 
table will do as well. You cut a C-shape in some cardboard that will fit in 
your envelope, or maybe make it out of stiff hanger wire, string a paper clip 
on a thick rubber band between the legs of the C and wind it tight. Fold a 
piece of paper loosely around it and put it in the envelope. When the 
recipient pulls out the paper the paperclip will unwind loudly. Make sure the 
kids all have a change of underwear handy.

In your case you put some other stuff in the space leaving just enough room 
for the noisemaker. When the top is on the trap is set, when the top is 
removed the joke is on, the paper clip really rattles that paper. You can use 
them again and again by just rewinding them. Of course, the kids will then 
use them on you, perhaps when you least expect it..
