GN,

I only downloaded comm98.chm.  If I need comm98.chi as well that would 
explain my problem!

I'm having success in getting data in and out of the port but still want 
to optimize my approach.  If I can get the complete documentation I 
should be able to do so.  Thanks again for the link to the HTML you sent. 
 It helped me get to where I am.
