David, A few thoughts here: 1. Using P2P with VFP or in fact any data centric product WILL cause you problems. At the very least have one machine dedicated as a "server" with no data entry on it and if possible get a real server installed. Many, many hours of fixing damaged data has taught me this. I won't even look at a network application unless it is using a real server such as linux/Server2K or 2K3. Server = stability!!!
2. Even with a server turn ALL O/S caching off as this can really screw up VFP due to delayed cache writes. 3. Turn off the Offline files in Vista (See posting earlier this week) as this will screw your application and cause loads of errors. 4. You said applications that ran on 10Mb no can't run on 54Mb. Well the 54Mb (Wireless I assume) is just a theoretical limit and in reality you will never get anywhere near that. 5. Turn off all antivirus options that mean .dbf's and .cdx's are scanned as again this will reduce throughput considerably. 6. I assume you have already done this but ensure app VFP service packs have been applied. VFP9 with SP1 is very, very stable. As you say, themes are easily solved but have you also done "set tablevalidate 0" to turn of the internal VFP table error check when opening a table, which is a new setting that can dramatically slow down opening tables on a network if it is set to 3 (the default). 7. As for the Vista problem, I can't really comment without seeing more of the application, but apart from permissions problems and minor controls not displaying properly and form borders appearing incorrectly, (search www.Foxite.com for detail) I can't say I have had that many problems - apart, that is from pulling my hair out at how difficult it is to get around all the Vista "OS Built in Protection". Suggestion: Avoid Vista - at least until SP1 has come out - but that's just a personal choice. All in all VFP9 works faster and more stable than any other VFP release I have ever used. I started with Foxbase+ in 1990 and have written standalone and networked applications on Server based Netware and Windows NT and peer to peer on Windows for Work groups and Windows 95/98 . Apart from permissions and idiots unplugging cables I have never really had a problem. I turned up to a location with a network put my stuff on it and a way it went. Now, for the first time in four years I have bee developing a networked Foxpro application boy have things changed. It is a peer to peer Network with Vista Home and XP home machines. First they where setup with wireless I tried running the application , but after standing with my hands in my pockets waiting for a page change on a pageframe I decided that it had to go. We use to run applications on 10mb networks and now they can't be run on 54mb. I also moved the data from an XP machine to one of the faster Vista machines. I managed to get XP machines to connect to shared folder on it but it refused to let the other Vista machine anywhere near it. The other problem seems to be themes. Why does Visual Foxpro, a Microsoft product, have such problems with themes and why aren't they just ignored in Foxpro applications. At first when starting up the application on both XP and Vista the areas of the form not covered by the page where transparent. The only way to get the full form was to minimize and then maximize it again. I have since cured it on the XP machines with SCREEN.Themes=.F. But not so on the Vista machine. I have turned Aero off and set the program compatibility to XP sp2 but it had now effect. Some of the new features Visual Foxpro 9.0 are nice but with the serious speed and compatibility problems I will think twice about doing another VFP Project. --- StripMime Report -- processed MIME parts --- multipart/alternative text/plain (text body -- kept) text/html --- [excessive quoting removed by server] _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: [email protected] Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/[EMAIL PROTECTED] ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
