People get the kind of government they accept and deserve in a democracy...
which is why cities (like Detroit) are loosing the population of normal
productive citizens. When the government is run by and for those seeking a
handout and is more sympathetic to the perps than the victims, normal people
will just leave and the city, or whatever unit, and it continues in a downward
spiral.
Just as with a small child, if you tolerate bad behavior, you will get more of
it. It's a matter of values, where there are none, the place falls apart. It
is disingenuous to complain that businesses are moving out of some populated
areas, taking jobs with them, if they are treated as one more resource to be
used an abused, with no effort being made to protect the safety of the
individuals or their property.
Some attempts are being made through 'enterprise zones' to lure businesses into
depressed areas with tax breaks, etc., but I for one will not move into a war
zone... unless the govenrment (read police, with the support of the citizens
and courts) cleans it up. Then, however, they may not need the other
incentives. Maybe we have this backwards.
