Well, yes and no. There are kids and candy stores, and we learn moderation, one way ot the other. There are too may car brands to choose from, two many TV resolutions, but civilization manages to get by. There is a great essay on the "Paradox of Choice" I encourage everyone to read. It is true that many choices make things more difficult at times. I know I struggle when trying to pick the "optimal" new printer or laptop or networking technologies. It's "easier" if you only have one choice, even if it is mediocre. But there's a price to pay for mediocrity, too. As far as standardization, I would say that the Free World is more interested in sticking with _real_ standards (http, html, OpenDoc, SGML, etc.) and not trying to "lock in" their customer base with proprietary extensions. Retooling every year has multiple aspects: hardware and software keep evolving, and we need to keep up. So, multiple-core CPUs and virtualization will be driving factors in getting new hardware. Aspect-Oriented Programming and some of the advances in software development means we can write better, faster, more efficient systems in newer languages; few of us want to code in FoxBase any more. So, these are the good aspects of retooling. The bad aspects are when a vendor of a proprietary technology decides to orphan its customers, whether that's Paradox or Multimate or Windows 2000 or FoxPro.
