I've been playing around with VSS/VFP project integration again and
wanted to pass on some tidbits. First, I had been using SourceOffSite
for years as my provider because it is way faster in a WAN situation.
Since I moved in to an office over a year ago, I've kept using it.
However, now I'm on the same LAN as my VSS repository so I thought I'd
install the standard VSS client and see how it works. The first thing I
found is that VSS is way faster than SOS when you're on the same LAN.
With SOS, I could wait for a minute or 2 when loading a project with
several hundred files attached to source control. The VSS client loads
it up in a few seconds. This is pretty much the exact opposite of the
behavior in a WAN situation, where the VSS client is essentially
unusable. File checkin/out is reasonably equivalent. The next thing I
ran into were "record is out of range" errors when trying to perform any
VSS actions from the VFP project manager for this particular project.
I'd brought this up with MS years ago but never got satisfactory
assistance or explanation because as soon as they heard I was using SOS,
they did the 3rd party product dance. I also checked in with the VSS
guru, TR, but he also was ultimately puzzled by the behavior I was
experiencing. So when it happened today, I decided to try using
automation commands to check in the form I was working on and it worked.
I used the _vfp.ActiveProject object and all worked well. Guess it's
time to go see if any of the Project Manager source code can shed some
light...
