        The main reason was that all of VS would have to work with .Net, and  
that for VFP to do that, a lot of the stuff that made it better than  
VB would have been lost. The minor reason was that everything in VS  
had to have the same version and get revved at the same time, and in  
those days VFP was being more actively (well, more quickly at least)  
developed than the rest of VS.

        The choice was either a) assimilate VFP into VS, and lose its  
identity, or b) remain separate but risk being marginalized. Either  
way, the result would have been about the same, except that with a),  
existing VFP code would have been broken with VS 7, much the way that  
VB6 wouldn't work in VB.Net.
