The extreme middle???
Is that like "My shirt size is Extra Medium"?
The point I was going to make earlier before I got sidetracked with
asserting the validity of the question was that you were singling out
their religion rather than their fundamentalism. All religions have
good qualities, but all usually have a fundamentalist group that
twists the religion into whatever serves their needs.
Had you bothered to read any of the literature on al Qaeda that I
had posted in the years after 9/11, you would have known that the
very idea that they could be working with someone like Saddam would
have been ludicrous. They are a fundamentalist group who violently
oppose *all* secular governments, and Saddam's was nothing if not
secular. He did not recognize the authority of any religious leader;
the only authority was himself. This is antithetical to al Qaeda, and
given the fact that Saddam was only in power because the US supported
him, he was viewed as the equivalent of an "Uncle Tom" to them: an
Arab working with the infidels.
Fundamentalism means willfully turning off your brain and forfeiting
the power of your thinking, and instead following some pre-determined
set of absolute, inviolable rules. It is a huge but unfortunately
common mistake to look at Muslim fundamentalists and generalize from
them to all the rest.
