Vista, well, once you turn off the half dozen irritating things MS put in there, figure out where they hid settings you need and double the system ram on your box to get it back to where XP Pro was performing; it's not entirely without charm. I have the luxury of not needing to support any applications I've written past XP; so I can focus on Vista development with an essentially clean slate. I'll admit I have grown fond of the file system changes within Vista, and some of the bells and whistles are fun to code against ( sidebar gadgets, for instance ). It's funny, IMO MS did a nice job with some of the smaller 'touches' that make an OS really stand out, but bombed in making the overall package work the way it should. If anyone knows of an Insider's-view of the Vista development cycle book I'd sure love to read it. As much as I would love an Apple, I don't have the cash and I work in a PC-centric environment. I love linux, and have some linux PC's deployed, but it's not a serious option for widespread deployment here at work, so it's back to Vista.

Man, Vista is such an easy target it would seem! > I know Dave Smith uses Vista to a high degree of success. I have a dual boot machine I run 2000 Pro SP4 on, and boot into Vista Ultimate to test my various apps and InstallShield installations on. I have run Vista under VPC also. But it is such a resource hog that even on a 2Gb machine running it under VPC really choked things. At least with a dual boot machine I have a shot at running Vista in a fairly real-world environment. That said, well, I applaud Dave's ability to use Vista day in and day out. Personally I do not care for it. But I also know the day is coming when Windows folks will not have a choice other than to use Vista if they do not want to migrate to Mac/Linux.
