Yes, a DSP is a dedicated bit of hardware that excels at processing
signals.  You need a very fast CPU to match a DSP.  For example a
custom DSP can easily handle real-time mpeg encoding, but you need a
2-3Ghz x86 CPU to even attempt that.

My understanding of the Cell processor is that it's not all it's made
out to be.  Games after are typically very single process orientated.
