We also use Mdaemon and have done for probably about the same time.  We 
make everyone use Thunderbird for their clients and we log every 
incoming and outgoing message in an archive and therefore don't backup 
user folders on machines.
My boss Peter has even got blackberries to work with our setup.
Thunderbird folders are really easy to deal with and we get warning 
messages (as does the user) when they start to get near 2gb.
