So, I pay more for the engine and gas (if I can find it) and hope to get
5% more MPGs... Almost sounds like a wash...

I do like diesel and have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 Duramax which gets
me about 18MPG (with a trailer). One point on a trip we were getting
low on fuel and drove around and around and finally found gas station
that diesel. As soon as I pull up to the pump the low fuel light came
on. It was $50 to fill the tank and now it is $75.
