A far more practical, but not necessarily cost effective unless viewed over about 10 years, is the use of a geo-thermal exchange system (not geo-thermal heating). I have looked into it, and the ROI would be about 7 years assuming no increase in utility expenses, and the system really working as advertised. As for heating, with all the servers and PCs (and related equipment) we run 24 x 7 we have litle need for additional heavy duty heating. Not a very efficient way to heat the home, and it adds a heat load during warm weather we fight with AC. But it is what it is, and is still less costly than me renting an office away from the home.
