Actually Guardian Dogs. Difference between guard and guardian is guard dogs are usually trained to be such. These guys are bred for over 5000 years to work on their own, make their own decisions. You have to be smarter than they are to really get along with them, no easy task. They protect their flocks ( in this case - us) from predators, 2 or 4 legged. They are peaceful and would rather not fight but if provoked, they only have one mission - to win. In the fields, you usually work 2-4 together and they decide amongst themselves who is the leader almost on a daily bases. It is truly a wonder to watch them work. When faced with a predator, the leader-of-the-day will approach him, backed by one or two others. The last one will run around back and forth behind the flock in case of a rear attack. They work all this out on their own - no training. You put a pup of 8-10 weeks in with the flock and they grow up with the flock. There are very few reports of any losses of the flock to the Pyrs even when there is no food available, they will hunt small critters for food rather than kill one of their own flock, or just not eat for a while. Very loyal but aloof. Ours want to be petted but when they have had enough just walk away. If you call them back they look at you like " I was just there... Maybe later." Jim
