I agree that this topic is OT; so that's where I am putting it.

The last issue of the Economist magazine has a long series of articles on
population migration around the world. There are strong positive and
negative aspects in equal measure so there is no definitive conclusion. It
all depends on how each individual is affected. Even then the immediate
perception of each person may not square with the overall affect. He may not
get a raise in pay but on the other hand many prices may fall so he is left
at the same standing but his perception is that he is not doing so well.

Another example is NAFTA. It has vastly benefited the overall economy in
Texas but seriously hurt the manufacturing jobs in Ohio. The total value to
the U.S. has been positive. Not to say that it couldn't have been done
better but politicians did what they did about not enforcing a more level
playing field.

Consider another thing. As our population ages we will need more young
people to work so they can contribute to Social Security and pay the
retirees. In the next 5 years we will need 3 working people to cover the
payments to one retiree. Please be aware that our Social Security system is
one big I.O.U.; Congress has raided the original fund leaving it worthless.
