Below is a link to an interesting article about the last Ice Age. The
article provides several theories about what might cause an Ice Age, but
the bottom line is:

#------------------------------
It is a geologic fact that ice has had a great impact on North America.
Besides the geological evidence of moraines, kettle lakes, gouged
bedrock, and erratic boulders, Greenland and Antarctic ice core samples
have demonstrated that levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) have fluctuated
over the millions of years. Lower levels of CO2 depict cooler periods in
earth's history, but it is unclear whether these lower levels are the
cause or the effect. Although a great amount of scientific research has
been applied to the study of ice and ice ages and much knowledge has
been gained, why they occur is just as much a mystery now as it was when
Joseph Adhémar published the first detailed ice age theory in his 1842
book, Revolutions de la Mer, Deluges Periodics.

I found Charles Hapgood's theory of "Wandering Poles" to be fascinating.
