You are very lucky to have an employer who appreciates "social networking" and the importance of it. Many employers do not and that's a real shame. You can learn so much at user groups, conferences, etc. which all benefit the employer. You learn knowledge about particular subjects. You get ideas that can start your creative juices flowing. You can also make contacts that can be very beneficial down the road.
I won't work for a company that doesn't value social networking! Period! Not negotiable. I don't want to work for companies that don't have the same philosophies as I do for developing software. I must say I am rather pleased how things turned out... But one thing the boss said he placed a great value on was my desire and ability to network network network, first with the Software Association of Oregon (www.sao,org) and now I'm one of the founders of the IT Professionals Forum (www.itproforum.org). To me neither is a big deal (I'm not w/ the SAO anymore), but my boss thinks so. In fact $4k of my increase is just for being out there learning and socializing.... Get out there... mix... mingle.... network.... ya just never know what it might lead to... -- Matthew S.
