This bit me yesterday and drove me crazy. If you are using certain Dell machines with dell wireless configuration utility, dialing into that machine causes the network to drop. I haven't tried this fix yet, but it's exactly what I was seeing. After trying to connect via remote desktop, not only would it just give me a black screen, but I also couldn't ping the box anymore. Apparently the fix is to allow the windows configuration tool to take control.
