Wow! I had no idea you hit such a solid brick wall. Shame the WiFi is not working in Kubuntu. I can say that Suse Linux Enterprise Server v-10 has been reliable, although given how smoothly Ubuntu is performing I may opt to not renew the Suse Linux Enterprise Server subscription for a 2nd year. I am already planning to cut to Ubuntu Server in the next few months to see how it stacks up. That said, I found the Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop less delightful to use than Ubuntu, but as you pointed out at least it is accepted and offered by some PC manufacturers as a viable Windows alternative. I did try out OpenSuse (free version of Suse Linux Desktop), and found it was a long and drawn out installation, and for not much exciting to look at compared to Ubuntu. But, if OpenSuse has WiFi drivers that work you are in a good zone. You can try-and-buy their Suse Linux Enterprise Server or Workstation (I think for 30 days) in case OpenSuse does not handle the WiFi for you.
I have not tried out any WiFi with Ubuntu (native Gnome, not Kubuntu), so I have nothing to offer there. Ubuntu and Kubuntu are said to be cut from the same cloth under the hood, it is just the GUI that is really different between them. Who knows for sure, however? As an aside, in case you are thinking of trying out Linspire Linux, they are now using Ubuntu as their core distro. Not bad, but they made a few small changes that just do not appeal to me as much as Ubuntu Desktop does. I guess that when it comes to the human experience there is only perfection in death, and in knowing someone, somewhere is goint to tax you until death comes (even then they may come after you after that!). Yep, everything is a compromise on at least one point or another.
