Joe,
Don't even bother with OCR for handwritten documents it just isn't worth 
using. As for the document content then hold just the link in a VFP 
table with the document held as a .jpg or .tif image. Using General 
fields to embed the document is suicidal as and when you get any table 
corruption - its one of the few things that VFP is definitely not good 
at! Apart ffrom anything else you will soon bust the 2Gb barrier.

If you have a windows 98 master disk it is worth looking at the Kodak 
imaging activeX which is easy to use for scanning even thouth the 
license is strictly speaking only for Win98.
