I picked up an HL-1440 for my father to use with a Lispire Linux PC (v-4.5) a few years ago. The only thing I found with them was their firmware puts them to sleep after so much time of non-use, which is fine. except the drivers then available via CUPS would not properly wake the printer up after an extended sleep period. So to get his printer to operate after a long period of non-use (over 12 hours or so) he has to turn off the printer, then turn it back on, or simply press the OnLine (?) button to get it to light back up. The other month I set him up with Ubuntu Linux v-7.10, mostly to get him into a smoother interface (I really like Ubuntu 7.10 a lot). I was also hoping the new driver that came native with Ubuntu Linux would do a better job of waking up the printer, but thus far it does not seem to have helped. I have read with an earlier model driver does a better job (1210 model, perhaps?). Other than that, with all the light duty lasers I have seen in use, the Brother is a real trooper.
