I know this is a very weak barometer of interest in programming languages, but bear with me for a moment. Some googles on these phrases: ada programmer 121,000 hits Cobol programmer 263,000 Rpg programmer 227,000 Lisp programmer 192,000 VFP programmer 428,000 C# programmer 184,000 Python programmer 368,000 Php programmer 1,430,000 Mysql programmer 2,520,000 You'll expect me to talk about the VFP count, but no, I'll talk about the ADA count (which is close to the C# count, btw). Remember ADA, the gov't sponsored language that was going to be mandated and end all other languages, only to be stillborn? That being the case, then why are there 121,000 hits on the subject? Point #1: there are people out there selling snow to Eskimos. No matter what you have to sell, there's a buyer somewhere. Crab claws, painted hula hoops, comic books, Cheap Replica Watches ... I can make this stuff up and find interest in it somewhere. Now take the case of selling VFP, be it services or products, it may not be in the same league as selling, say, Ford automobiles, but it's also not on the other end of the spectrum, such as selling ADA or RPG programming, either. Point # 2: Sure, not everyone uses VFP, but the question is: how many customers does it take to keep 1 developer happy?
