> Redundant Array of Inexpensive Dispensers, anyone? :-) Actually, per an associate of mine in a discussion back in 1994 or so, there had been a raging controversy years ago about what RAID meant. One group said "Redundant Array of *Inexpensive* Drives", the other said "Redundant Array of *Independent* Drives". My guess it was supposed to be "Inexpensive", but the hard drive manufacturers took exception to that and began to claim it was "Independent" (because who wants to sell a cheap drive?). I never Googled the history of the term RAID, so perhaps there is more or less to that than I am aware of.
All I know is I LOVE RAID5 with hot swap capability. Yet, with all of my own equipment and all of the file imaging and backup technology, I have never bothered running RAID5 (or any other RAID level) on my own machines. Perhaps I just am not too worried about 100% Up Time, as RAID is not meant to be a replacement for file backups - it is meant to increase Data Protection, System Up Time & Availability in the event a Hard Drive does fail.
