DOS still scattered file pieces all over the hard drive, but since it was
not a multi-tasking OS there was far less background disk activity - thus
far less defragmentation within a given period of time than with Windows and
equivalent software applications. I still remember when different defrag
apps came out (Disk Optimizer) M$ stated such applications were not
necessary. After all, if a person was worried about that kind of problem
all they had to do was back up their hard drive, format the hard drive, and
recover the program and data files after reinstalling DOS. Yep, the Good
Old days when I could back up a 20Mg Hard Drive using no more than 20 1.2Mg
high density 5.25" floppy disks (or 30 regular double sided 360k disks)!
