My personal thoughts: I've done a fair bit of PHP coding over the past few years and didn't have any problems 'groking' PHP. Granted its ugly, but most of the time it just worked. And was usually surprisingly fast. Now, after spending 2 months studying Python (my 3rd or 4th attempt to 'grok' this language), the ugliness of PHP stands out like a sore thumb.
