Hi Malcolm That article from Jakob was specifically about menu items and maybe about any list of items in a column, not about field labels/captions. Consider that he means when you're scanning down the column looking for something it's easier the way he suggests.
When filling in a form you're reading left to right, eyes tracking from one caption+field pair to the next.
