Starting with SAV v-10.x, their solution covers Spyware and Adware, whereas previous versions do not. Hence performance was impeded, especially with their default settings. Basic rule of thumb, scan no network drive files, and omit any database related files. Easy to do and to distribute to client PCs if you use the Symantec Control Console on a PC/Server that manages the client PCs.
