Nope, that's a new one for me, and I've been on Vista 60 hours a week since
prelaunch. Take a look at the event logs for remote mappings, maybe take a
look at the sharing settings you have set up on that drive. With the goofy
setups Vista has, I could see how a music program or other media software
could try to create a virtual map to a shared folder. I'd also take a quick
look in the msconfig startup tab to make sure nothing odd has crept in
there. It might be worth changing your network settings to 'Private' as
well, if that's possible for the computing environment.

Has anyone had this experience with Vista where it seems to intermittently,
in a random manner, create drive mappings on a local pc?

I've been using Vista on my pc for months, and this started appearing about
two weeks ago, and I can't see an obvious reason for this behavior?
