I'm not sure what the big deal is, other than the complete reversal in thinking
between the R and D candidates. For most conservatives, the idea of public
financing of an election is an anathema. The point - prior to McCain-Feingold
- was that people could support the candidate of their choice and it was a form
a free speech. With McC-F the process of financing a campaign has increased
exponentially in complexity. The idea of taking money thrown into a pot
indiscriminately is the antithesis of people supporting the candidate of their
choice, but is the easier way out.

For the D to give up federal money must have given the whole set of advisors
cold sweats and nausea for nights on end. However, and this really boggles my
mind, they believe that taking their message to the people and not the
government handout will be to their benefit. Could it be they are closet free
enterprisers. Nah!
