I was able to eliminate all of my M$ update and problem matters on my Compaq PC (3.8Ghz Intel CPU, 4Gb RAM) by stripping XP Pro (which ain't that bad an OS finally) and installing Ubuntu 710, later upgrading to Ubuntu 804 flawlessly. heh-heh...
