The trap that brought down the Soviet Union in Afghanistan involved
Texas Senator Charlie Wilson, who was the head of a very powerful
congressional committee that control a huge budget that need not report
as to how the funds were spent.

Afghanistan was fighting the Soviet Union with WW II style weapons, and
the Soviet's helicopters, tanks, and jets were armored against such
weapon. In order to hide USA involvement in the conflict, Charlie
Wilson and his CIA team obtained modern Soviet Union weapon systems like
the personal portable surface to air missile systems used to shot down
Soviet helicopter gunships and jets. Soviet weapon were also obtained
to deal with large soviet tanks. Not only was the modern Soviet
weaponry supplied to the Afghans, the USA supplied advisers to train the
Afghans on these technical weapon systems.

And who do you think was the gun dealer for the CIA that supplied the
Soviet Weapons supplied to the Afghans. It was Israel. Not only was
the USA involved in the trap, but China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the
United Kingdom were also providing covert military assistance to
Afghanistan's mujahideen, so Russia really got bother-in-lawed on that
war. This could also happen to the USA in Afghanistan with only the
names changed to protect the guilty.
