Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this. I agree with all of you who said it was a bad idea, but had to investigate it anyway so I could give the users what they wanted. In the end, I pretty much told the plant manager what all you you said: "It is the way it is. If the users want the whole field selected, they should tab there. If they click there, the cursor will be exactly where they clicked. It's something they're gonna have to get used to."
