New, not refurbished, great price. But only a 1 year warranty. For a bit more a new Seagate FreeAgent unit has a 5 year warranty. The FreeAgents are pre-configured at the factory to go to sleep after a 15 minute lull in activity, and wake up quickly when activity is demanded of them. But, that works only with Win 2000/XP/Vista.
If you have pre-Win 2000, Win 2003+ Server, Mac OS X or Linux you will end up losing your USB connection when the unit goes to sleep, and have to find a way to kick the HDD in the pants. Or do you? If you have a Win 2000/XP/Vista PC you can connect to the HDD via USB2, then run a utility that comes on the HDD to change the delay time before it goes to sleep, or turn the delay off altogether. The setting is stored in the HDD circuitry itself. So the HDD can then be moved to a in 2003+ Server, Mac OS X or Linux machine without any further issue. I have been using a pair of USB2/eSATA (I use the eSATA) 750Gb FreeAgent HDD for several months now, and am pleased with their performance. I have several friends who acquired a few various sized units also, and they too are happy with them, and they are using them with XP/Linux/Mac (I am using mine with Win 2003 Server). One friend, who purchased 8 750/1,000Gb units had to return one after a few days when it refused to turn on any longer. I told him there was a hard to see on/of button on the base, but by then he had already exchanged it. My two cents.
