I certainly have copied more then that at a time, so I doubt that's the problem.
My guess, since you mentioned that your using a laptop is that your doing this over a wireless connection. I have found that transferring files that are either very large or many in number always ends up in an error if using the wireless connection. If I hard cable it, I don't have a problem. What's strange is that my wireless connection appears to work fine for everything else. File copies are the only place where I've had a problem.
