OS versions are not the issue, but the Office or Word versions.

At my company we have 25% machines on Vista and the rest on XP.  Both
can read Word docs from each other.  the office 2003 versions have the
add-in from M$ for .docX extensions and no problems there.

Sorry but not an issue from my experience.
