This morning was a trial setting conference, at which we had hoped to get a
trial date for our lawsuit with our general contractor.

Civil cases are extremely backlogged, and the judge simply said that due to
the age of our case she was continuing the trial setting conference date to
9/24/09. That means we will be waiting for nearly a year to get a trial
date. By "age", she meant it had ONLY been 14 months since the case was
filed.

Right now, we're just trying to figure out how we can make it through
another year while we pursue discovery and motions. We're trying to finish
enough of the house so we can move in, and thereby reduce costs to help us
service the loan.

In the meantime, since I can't afford enough legal help to simply hand the
case off to a lawyer to rack up some more hours, I've been taking a course
in legal procedure and might even take another law course or two. I had two
law courses back when I was working on my MBA. You never know where this
kind of thing will finally lead. I don't intend to become a lawyer but I am
certainly getting more interested in legal issues.

California is one of the few states in the US that offers online courses in
law from the local law schools. I found at least one college that offers a
law degree that can be earned entirely online, while others offer a sizeable
number of courses online.

I've also been thinking about sitting through a few trials. They're public,
after all.

What a pain this whole thing is! However, both Steve and I believe that
buying this land and building the house were the right thing to do, and we
intend to see it through to the best of our ability.
