I wish instead you'd focus on my substantive arguments, which I do make earnestly and at great length. I like humor, but don't profess to be professional comedian. I just try to use levity, and I love writers who do--like H.L. Mencken, P.J. O'Rourke, and Mark Steyn. I know, I know: don't try this at home. :) I don't use anybody else's attempt at humor, satire or sarcasm to tune them out--not even Ricardo or Helio, who go out of their way to mock me personally. Yea, not even Ed, whose probably the most intolerant guy on this list when it comes to tuning other people out self-righteously. Or even Pete or Mike, who are also rather tone deaf to politically correct expression, if I may be permitted an understatement. I still value the exchanges I have with all of them. And I don't understand your sensitivity to the specific expression I used above--it was intended to combine a couple of my real criticisms of him as a candidate in a metaphor. Since when is that "wrong"? All this holier-than-thou sanctimony on the issue of literary license is not a good excuse IMHO to ignore people. > > > Vince, in all seriousness, and as respectfully as I can possibly say > this, > > you have no f****g idea who or what you're about to elect, or how > much worse > > things are going to get. Then I will try to state it as I more approximately mean it, i.e., that a great many people are deluded into believing that Obama is something he's not. They are projecting onto him their earnest wishes and desires--something that is dangerous and almost never leads to good things. I know; I did the same thing with Bush, a fact that sadly I see now in retrospect. And so now that I am attune to those dangers, I see everyone who "hates" Bush making precisely the same mistake with a politician whose appeal makes no sense outside of a cult of personality. Cult of personality and republican government simply do not mix. It would not be so bad if the man had an ounce of humility in him, but he doesn't. I find no justification in his record or his resume to justify any of the confidence so many seem willing to confer on him, and what's worse, nobody is even trying to argue on the basis of facts about this guy. I haven't been able to engage any of his supporters about Obama's real record--they just don't care. It's all "gut feel" type thinking that makes me want to tear my hair out. It's terrifying to watch, particularly because they is no rational basis for discussion. That said I regret you were offended, and I apologize for it. > I think that either McCain or Obama will be better than Bush has been. > I think Obama will be much better. You disagree. I respect that. > Let's just let it lie there, wait till the elections are over, then > keep > an eye on the new president. > I don't agree McCain or Obama would be better than Bush--I think they are both bad for the country, for different reasons. But in Obama I see something ominous on a scale I don't even know how to express. I would take Bill Clinton (Hillary may be stretching it... but yea, even her) over Obama any day--I am that mystified by his rise to power. It has nothing to do with his stated policies, which shift like any politician's positions do and are carefully crafted to give him center-left appeal, and certainly not his skin color. I'm totally cool with a black or Hispanic of female or whatever president. I can live with liberal policies getting their equal opportunity to succeed or fail--if it were just a matter of policy and economics, I would not feel as ... burdened as I do. I suppose it will take the worst happening for anybody to see it, as ever, in retrospect. And I would love to be wrong about this. I pray I am. - Bob _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: [email protected] Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/[EMAIL PROTECTED] ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
