I was able to check the status of both Steve's and my own absentee ballots online. With all the stuff that has happened in the past, I planned to show up to vote if my ballot wasn't counted yet.
However, my ballot and Steve's were both received on 10/30/08, and the status was recorded as "good". It looks like this kind of absentee ballot tracking is available in many parts of the country.
