Watching Obama on this video a couple things are apparent.

The first is that he is deeply arrogant. "Don't waste your question." Wow.

The other thing is that he's vulnerable to corruption, and not very good at
defending himself. He couldn't quite man-handle the reporter into dropping
his question, but he sure thought he sounded clever trying. He's clueless
about how ineffective his smarmy remarks are. His lofty rhetoric seems a
world away in these contexts.

To imagine that a guy rising so quickly through such a corrupt machine has
emerged pure as the driven snow, unlike everyone else around him, is
delusional. But the protection the media gave him during the campaign
against really obvious questions has ill served him in preparation for the
job (and let's face it, it's the only preparation for the job he's had). Get
used to this kind of press conference.

Rahm was caught on 21 post-election phone conversations talking with Blago
about the Senate seat. Obama promised a lot of things he's brazenly gone
back on, of which the promise to be hands off with this selection process is
actually relatively minor. If we know anything about Rahm, it's that he's a
ruthless partisan prick, an even more magnificent bastard than Rove, who is
fully capable of everything Blago is accused of, and more.

That Obama picked him to be his chief of staff should be a red flag to
anyone who thought he was bringing a new era of post-partisanship to town.

Then again, these people are mostly the kind of folks who like red flags
anyway, so maybe I ask too much.

They will probably all goosestep around the new Chicago thugocracy with
partisan delight.
