I'm a big fan of Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/). I've never tried ftp uploading, as ftp is not very secure, but it probably has that, and the kitchen sink, built-in. I've always used the web-based uploading functionality. It's a bit of work to set up and get configured, but "with great power comes a great manual."
