Jorge M. Benitez, an art professor at Virginia Commonwealth
University, fled Cuba at age 4 in 1962. He recalled his father throwing
him from the bed to the floor and covering him as Castro’s men shot at
what they believed were counter-revolutionaries in a nearby field. They
implemented a system of terror just like Batista, he said.

“As an exile, I cannot justify Batista under any circumstances,” he
said. “He was pretty bad. Castro was infinitely worst.”
Benitez said he and his parents don’t think about the revolution like
they did 30 years ago, he said.

“I think it’s because the revolution is old and in my view, it obviously
failed,” he said. “The greatest tragedy of the Cuban Revolution is that
it could have been amazing. It could have been the catalyst for real
change in Latin America.”
