I copied the _reportlistener.vcx class library from the c:\program
files\..\..\ folder to my development folder and from there was able to save
the changes and now xfrx runs fine.

I'm not Cathy, but I can tell you why I use it and recommend it:

1) Lots of export formats (this is enough by itself, killer feature and
original reason for
purchase).
2) Better previewer out of the box with export integrated in.
3) Is being enhanced.
4) Is compatible with report designer enhancements in VFP 9 and seems
faster.
5) Makes the reports in my app look the same as the reports customers
generate in Stonefield Query
(which uses XFRX).
6) If you are using older version of VFP it works and provides way better
reporting experience.

One of the best third-party tools I have invested in over the years.

Just curious. When you know the VFP Report Writer backwards why would you 
need something like XFRX ?
